back to Training Catalog Page

Learning Objectives

Failure to properly maintain boilers can lead to crippling service interruptions, thousands of dollars of preventable repair bills, and shortened equipment life. Faulty boilers are a safety hazard to personnel and can cause serious damage to surrounding structures. Maintaining your boiler at peak operating efficiency will provide considerable fuel savings as well.

This CIRMA training and education program is intended for all municipal employees whose responsibilities involve the oversight, operation and/or maintenance of boilers, as well as others who need to become familiar and conversant with the technical aspects associated with boiler operation, maintenance, and safety.

Training and education topics include:

  • Boilers -- what they are and how they work.
  • Boiler failures -- what can go wrong and why?
  • Safety components within boiler systems.
  • Boiler codes -- understanding their importance to proper operation and maintenance.
  • Fundamentals of boiler operation including startup, routine operation, and shutdown, with emphasis on testing of controls and safety devices.
  • Fundamentals of boiler maintenance, with an emphasis on maintaining code integrity, low water fuel cutouts, and safety/relief valves.
  • Boiler inspections -- what to look for and how to prepare.

Audience

This training and education program is designed for:

  • Directors of facilities
  • Operators
  • Maintenance personnel
  • Custodians
  • Fire marshals
  • Building officials

"Boiler systems are major financial investments, yet the methods for protecting these investments vary widely. Proper maintenance and operation of boiler systems is important with regard to efficiency and reliability. Without this attention, boilers can be very dangerous."
