Heat stress injuries & sports

Heat stress from hot summer weather can result in sudden, catastrophic -- and preventable -- injury to student athletes or summer camp participants. The Center for Disease Control reports that heat stress is a leading cause of death and disability among high school athletes with an estimated 9,300 injuries occurring annually.

Football players are at higher risk of heat stress injuries, as are youth who are overweight, fatigued, or out of condition. Sixty-six percent of all heat-related injuries to student athletes occur during the month of August. Coaches, trainers and and summer counselors should be aware of the risks of heat-related illness, and be able to recognize the symptoms and respond quickly to a medical emergency. Visit CIRMA's Heat Stress & Sports webpage.

Emotional & Social Intelligence Awareness

Over the past decade, aggressive behavior by students has increased dramatically in school districts across nation and in CIRMA-member schools here in Connecticut. CIRMA, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Education and our School District Advisory Committee, has responded to this troubling trend by developing a number of risk management resources to help public school leaders and staff improve the social and emotional well-being of students -- the foundation of a safer, more cooperative school community.

Emotional and social intelligence is defined as "competencies linked to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, which enable people to understand and manage their own and others' emotions in social interactions. These qualities and the behavior management techniques that build them are crucial in classroom management and the development of students' self-control and ability to learn.

CIRMA & HSB Equipment & Operational Efficiency Self-Assessment - New!

Money Saving Tips Designed Just for Schools. On average, it costs $4.00 a square foot to heat, cool and light a typical school building. This number is significantly higher than what schools spend on textbooks, computers, and supplies. With these figures in mind, the potential savings through improved energy efficiency is enormous. Improving energy efficiency can provide schools with an estimated saving of 20%, while also yielding additional benefits, such as:

  • Improve student performance
  • Increase security and safety
  • Improve teacher retention
  • Decrease liability
  • Reduce environmental impacts

So, how do you decide which energy efficient options have the best payback? Our energy savings portal offers simple steps for schools to take to save energy and keep crucial equipment operating smoothly. HSB's Equipment Operation and Efficiency Program offers money saving and energy efficiency tips in the following categories: space heating, lighting, water heating, space cooling, ventilation, cooking and refrigeration, and electrical.
