Understanding Workplace Violence and Preventing Harassment, Bullying & Hazing in the Workplace

June 14, 2018 - Lebanon, Connecticut
10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon  -  Check-in begins at 9:30 AM

Learning Objectives

Understanding Workplace Violence & Prevention Strategies
Employees expect their workplaces to be free from intimidation and threatening behavior, physical and verbal abuse, vandalism and arson--whether that violence is committed by another employee or by a member of the public. Although most workplaces are safe, the incidence of workplace violence has increased in recent years. Tragically, the vast majority of these incidents could have been prevented or mitigated if suspicious behavior had been recognized, reported, and an intervention been made.
This CIRMA training and education program describes the complex issues surrounding workplace violence. Participants will learn how to recognize potentially aggressive behavior and learn important  risk management tools to help prevent and mitigate it.

Participants will learn:
  • Workplaces and employees at higher risk.
  • Risk factors for workplace violence.
  • Common causes of violent and aggressive behavior, both internal and external.
  • Warning signs.
  • Psychological and cultural factors.
  • Components of a workplace violence prevention program to reduce incidents and liability.
  • Preventative measures.
  • Protecting organizational assets, including people, property, and information.
  • Emergency operations exercises.
  • Interventions and crisis response.

While the behaviors may resemble each other, harassment, bullying, discrimination, and hazing each have a different legal status that municipal or school employers should understand in order to avoid liability and create a positive work environment.

Preventing Harassment, Bullying & Hazing in the Workplace
Workplace bullying is considered to be the "repeated mistreatment of one or more employees with a malicious mix of humiliation, intimidation and sabotage of performance." Although detrimental, it is not specifically prohibited by any federal or Connecticut state law (other legal remedies may exist.) While bullying may create a hostile work environment, this is not the same illegal hostile work environment created by, for example, an employer who allows pornographic photos to be displayed or harassing remarks to be made about age, race, ethnic origin, disability or religion. Complicating the legal landscape further, hazing means any action which recklessly or intentionally endangers the health or safety of a person for the purpose of initiation, admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a student organization. Hazing is punishable by fine and other sanctions under Connecticut State Statute.

This CIRMA Training and Education program will help municipal and school leaders maintain a positive and constructive workplace, that reduces bullying or hazing behavior and potential liability.

Topic include:

  • Recognizing bullying or hazing behavior
  • Understanding the legal differences between harassment, bullying, discrimination, and hazing
