Heat stress from hot summer weather can result in sudden, catastrophic -- and preventable -- injury to student athletes or summer camp participants. The Center for Disease Control reports that heat stress is a leading cause of death and disability among high school athletes with an estimated 9,300 injuries occurring annually.Football players are at higher risk of heat stress injuries, as are youth who are overweight, fatigued, or out of condition. Sixty-six percent of all heat-related injuries to student athletes occur during the month of August. Coaches, trainers and and summer counselors should be aware of the risks of heat-related illness, and be able to recognize the symptoms and respond quickly to a medical emergency. Visit CIRMA's Heat Stress & Sports webpage.
Over the past decade, aggressive behavior by students has increased dramatically in school districts across nation and in CIRMA-member schools here in Connecticut. CIRMA, in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Education and our School District Advisory Committee, has responded to this troubling trend by developing a number of risk management resources to help public school leaders and staff improve the social and emotional well-being of students -- the foundation of a safer, more cooperative school community.
Emotional and social intelligence is defined as "competencies linked to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, which enable people to understand and manage their own and others' emotions in social interactions. These qualities and the behavior management techniques that build them are crucial in classroom management and the development of students' self-control and ability to learn.
